Hi everyone! I wanted to share one of my favorite pieces I've done. I call it False Confession. It's a 4' x 4' charcoal drawing I did in 2013 in my figure drawing class as my final project. I can say, it is not finished, but honestly what work ever is? I grew up Catholic and recently realized that Catholicism isn't something I agreed with. Confession is a part of that religion and I replaced the priest with a skeleton, signifying that we all end as another number on earth. This man confesses his sins to death instead of God. I know this is a touchy subject, and my intentions are not to tell you what's wrong or right in your beliefs, this is just my own view on it. Thanks for viewing.

Hi Abbey. Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, great charcoal drawing. I really like your rendering. One thought about the overall piece maybe "completing" the clothes of the skeleton? I think it's great that your artwork is very personal to you and along the way you discover something about yourself. I think education is also about self-discovery.
In terms of the subject matter, I think that confession takes on different forms. Confession in Catholicism is one, but confession does not need to pertain to sins, I think. Take for example literature. I think that some literature, the content reflects the thoughts of the authors. Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther ties very personally to the author's young love life (though it's too dramatic for my taste). A Japanese modern author, Osamu Dazai's major works are pretty much auto-biography of his life (very beautifully written, but very depressing).
Just a few thoughts. Keep posting.
